The Cold Hard Facts - the simple solution!

Traditional publishers rarely take on new authors without a proven sales past. If signed by a traditional publisher they will take your work and pay you a royalty and possibly an advance (although this is very rare for new authors). They take 100% control of your book and pay you between 8% to 15% royalties. Authors do not get this royalty until any advance is paid back in full. You do most of your promotion unless you are a big name author. When they are ready to retire your book they simply pull it from the market, never to be seen again.

Print on Demand (POD) companies charge an average of $600.00, many charge more, for a very basic service that simply produces a book. They set the price of your book usually higher than market value, which means less sales. Then they let you buy your book at a discount, which is still more than market value. Royalties vary widely and are useless unless the book is returnable. Book stores will not stock a non-returnable book. POD's today are now promising their books are returnable and they are, but at a cost to you. They make their books returnable by lowering the discount offered to book stores knowing full well that book stores will not buy these books for their shelves at the lower discount rate. Even worse, POD's will slash your royalties so they can make your book returnable. Your only sales come from books you are forced to peddle yourself. You do all your own promotion and you are fighting an uphill battle since you can not afford to discount your books at the 50% discount book stores expect. Remember, even small stores expect to make a profit. Don't be fooled by misinformation presented by many POD's, book stores expect a 50% discount, but most POD's only offer 40% and even more only grant 35%. Many of these POD's use automated processes and templates for page layout, covers and even copyediting which can lead to undesired results easily overlooked until your work is in the readers hands.
